- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach upset are side effects associated with Ozempic and may be worsened when the medication is combined with alcohol.
- However, research shows that Ozempic may have a use in treating alcohol use disorder.
- Research suggests that this drug can help curb people’s cravings for alcohol.
Speaking on the Page Six Virtual Reali-Tea podcast, The Real Housewives of Dubai star Caroline Stanbury revealed that she once “vomited” at West Hollywood bar The Abbey because of her Ozempic use.
His confession was in response to host Evan Real’s admission that he had stopped drinking several months earlier because of the way alcohol use worsened the effects of the weight loss drug.
Stanbury’s vomiting incident occurred after consuming only a small amount of alcohol, he told the host.
“You drink half a glass, and you’re like, literally — There’s no way you’re going to run to the bathroom,” he laughed.
“If you haven’t vomited on Ozempic, you haven’t lived,” he added.
Paul Daidone, MD, FASAM, Medical Director of True Self Recovery, said that the reaction between Ozempic and alcohol experienced by Stanbury and Real occurs because of how these GLP-1 drugs work.
Ozempic mimics glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that regulates blood sugar by stimulating the production of insulin. It also reduces bloating and reduces hunger, an effect that helps people lose weight.
Slow gastric emptying means that food and drink stay in the stomach longer, which can make people feel fuller for longer or, in some cases, feel nauseous, Daidone said.
Another factor that can lead to vomiting in those using Ozempic to treat diabetes is the fact that alcohol can cause a “dramatic change” in blood sugar.
“Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar can occur as a result of a combination of Ozempic’s hypoglycemic effect and the effect of alcohol in one ingredient,” Daidone explained, “and its symptoms can include nausea it’s heart and vomit.”
There is research that shows that Ozempic can have positive effects on those who live with them
For example, a series of cases published on November 27, 2023, at Journal of Clinical Psychiatryfound that 100% of six weight loss patients who used the generic version of Ozempic, semaglutide, also significantly reduced their AUD symptoms.
Explaining why Ozempic can have this effect, Michael Villarreal, CADC, Director of Tres Vistas Recovery, noted that studies have shown that GLP-1 agonists such as Ozempic impact pathways in the brain. which may be involved in immoral behavior.
“By altering these neural circuits, Ozempic can reduce the pleasurable effects of alcohol, thereby reducing its appeal and possibly promoting abstinence,” he said.
Villarreal also talked about Ozempic’s ability to induce satiety while suppressing cravings.
“[I]it can help a person not feel the urge to drink when they are out with friends or trying to cope with stress,” he said.
“This unique dual-effect profile of both physical and mental addiction makes Ozempic an excellent choice for those who want to quit or reduce their drinking while maintaining control conditions like diabetes or obesity,” he concluded.
The Real Housewives of Dubai star Caroline Stanbury discussed on a recent episode of Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast how she developed a negative reaction to alcohol after only a small drink, blaming Ozempic.
Experts say side effects associated with Ozempic, such as nausea and vomiting, can be worsened by alcohol use.
For people with diabetes taking Ozempic, alcohol use can cause blood sugar to drop further, and worsen the side effects associated with GLP-1 drugs.
However, Ozempic offers promise for those dealing with alcohol abuse. It can affect the reward pathway in the brain, making alcohol less desirable. It can also work to curb cravings.
